Have been out and about in the area near to our Hotel. Went to the Meemling Museum which is in the old St. John's Hospital building - huge area with vaulted ceilings and lots of religious art. Then walked to the Begijnhof which was built to house women of a lay order who didn't take the same vows as nuns. The buildings surround a small park which today was a sea of Daffodils. There are regular services by the few women who live there and I was in the Church for the midday prayers. Only three very old nuns so maybe that won't be happening for much longer. Also went to the old Dispensary which was part of St. John's Hospital. Fascinating to see the old instruments and medications used.
Today is very busy in Bruges - despite the rain, lots of people are out and about - everyone eating Frites and Waffles and buying chocolates. Not sure how all of the chocolate shops and restaurants survive as there are so many of them. The restaurants like to have a set three course menu for a fixed price - really wonder how people can eat that much food !!!!!!
The horse drawn carriages have been busy all day - they pass down our street so we hear them all of the time. Right now the Church bells have just stopped ringing and we can hear the Carillion from the Belfry -it's all happening here in Bruges.
