Flanders Fields Day - Judith departed at 8.30 am for the Quasimodo Tour and finally returned at 9.30 pm. Very interesting and almost incomprehensible day culminating with the Last Post at Ypres. The sight of the clay coloured soil and it's consistency certainly brought home how dreadful the conditions must have been. I managed to locate Sidney Churchward's marker on the Mennin Gate but no success in finding William Walter Hammond's. Grave at the place where he was supposed to have been re buried. The place which seemed to me to epitomise what I had read was Polygon Wood as it was very much as it would have been all those years ago. The farmers continue to find the detritus of war - some of it very dangerous especially the unexplored gas canisters and bombs which are still lethal to this day. Ypres is a beautiful city and was so pleased that I stayed for the Last Post as assist enabled me to have a look about. Sat next to a Canadian girl from Calgary on the bus so we palled up for the day. Had soup and a beer with her and a couple from Hervey Bay in Ypres - also ran into a few people from our boat trip. Margaret rested all day and has finally got to see a doctor today so we hope will finally be on the improve. Today I climbed the Belfry in Bruges - 6 Euros to climb the 366 steps. Very narrow and winding stairs but well worth the effort - I was in the queue for half an hour but saw the Carillion working and it was a a great experience. Walked around some more after that and then came back to check on Margaret and we walked to the Pharmacy together and got her medication- both had a nap in our sunlit room - can hear the horse drawn carriages going by all of the time beneath our window!!!
